Application Information
General Information
With every selection, our goal is to hire the best-qualified applicant. Our recruitment and selection process involves several steps to ensure this goal becomes a reality. A complete City job application is required for each position for which you are applying. The City also requires a cover letter, résumé, and five work-related references. Educational transcripts may be required to verify qualifications. Additional supplemental materials may also be required. Please review the job announcement to determine the items required for the position which interests you.
When completing our job application, be sure to read it carefully and answer all questions. In order to be considered for employment with the City of Spokane Valley, your application must be complete. It is strongly recommended that you include all education and experience you would like us to consider.
If you require any special accommodations in the recruitment and selection process, please email us at 509-720-5251. Accommodation requests should be made as soon as possible.
The City supports a zero drug or alcohol and limited-tobacco-use workplace. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and a criminal history check is a requirement of employment at Spokane Valley.
Veteran's Preference
The City complies with the statutory requirement in RCW 73.16.010 to prefer employing veterans and their widows, as well as spouses of veterans who have a service-connected permanent and total disability. If two or more candidates for the same position are equally qualified, the City will offer employment to the candidate who is preferred as defined by the RCW. If you believe you are eligible to be considered for preference under the RCW, please provide documents at the time of application to verify eligibility, such as a DD 214 or other appropriate service discharge record(s).
Basic Qualifications
Although each position has its job-specific qualifications and requirements, we have established a number of core basic qualifications which apply to all positions at the City. These are:
- A strong sense of customer service
- Strong communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills
- A stable and verifiable work history
- A record of regular and dependable attendance
- A valid driver's license and clean driving record (for positions where operation of a vehicle may be required)
- Eligibility to be employed in the United States
Screening
Only completed application packets (application, cover letter, résumé, 5 work-related references and any supplemental materials required) will be screened. After the posted closing or review date, the hiring manager or designee will review completed application materials and will assess the general qualifications of applicants. Items considered during this screening process include applicable work experience, education and training, orientation toward customer service and teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills, overall stability and quality of prior work history, overall presentation of application materials, and various other factors which best meet the requirements of the hiring department. It is important to remember that the applicant with the highest educational degree or most years of work experience may not be the best-qualified applicant.
Those applicants whose qualifications most closely correspond to the City's current needs will be contacted for testing and/or oral interviews.
Notification
As soon as decisions are made for testing and/or interviewing, selected candidates will be notified by phone or email. The status of the position as indicated on the position announcement web page will inform applicants as to where the City is in the process of hiring. Candidates who have not been contacted for an interview are encouraged to monitor the status of the position on our Job Openings page. Should the same or another position open for which you would like to apply, you must submit another application and any other materials you deem pertinent for the new opening
Reference Checks
Thorough reference checks are completed on all final applicants prior to receiving a conditional offer of employment.
